On one of the market's worst days in more than a year, a travel company gave investors a reason to buy after the bell. The details show why, and where the caution is.

Why did Airbnb stock jump after earnings?

Airbnb stock rose about 11% after hours on Thursday, Nov. 5, because third-quarter revenue grew 19%, its fastest pace in more than three years, and beat forecasts. It also raised its full-year outlook and authorized up to an additional $12 billion in share buybacks, the company said.

The timing made the move stand out. Airbnb (ABNB) closed the regular session at $170.13, down 3.54%, as the broader market sank, Yahoo Finance reported. After the report, it traded near $188 in overnight trading. Extended-hours prices can be jumpy, and sources gave different figures through the evening, so treat that 11% as an after-hours move rather than a closing price. We explain why in our guide to after-hours trading.

How good were Airbnb's Q3 numbers?

Revenue came in at $4.87 billion, compared with about $4.75 billion expected, and earnings were $3.16 a share, compared with $2.85 expected, 24/7 Wall St. reported. That's a revenue beat of about 2.5% and a profit beat of about 11%. Earnings were $2.21 a share a year earlier, according to Reuters-based coverage.

Airbnb's own report listed $1.9 billion in net income and $2.5 billion in adjusted EBITDA, a profit measure that leaves out items such as interest, taxes and stock pay. Gross booking value, the total guests spent on bookings, rose 21% to $27.7 billion. Nights and seats booked rose 16% to 155 million, up from 10% growth in the second quarter, 24/7 Wall St. said.

"Airbnb is back in growth mode," the company said. It added that nights booked in North America grew at their fastest pace in four years.

What did Airbnb forecast?

Airbnb expects fourth-quarter revenue of $3.22 billion to $3.28 billion, up 16% to 18% from a year earlier, including about 2 points of help from currency moves. The midpoint of $3.25 billion sits about 2.8% above the $3.16 billion analysts expected, Yahoo Finance said.

For the full year, Airbnb now expects revenue growth in the "high teens," up from "at least mid-teens." It raised its adjusted EBITDA margin target to about 36% from at least 35.5%, according to call highlights on Yahoo Finance.

Guidance often moves a stock more than the quarter that just ended. Our explainer on why stocks move after earnings walks through how that works.

What does a $12 billion buyback mean for shareholders?

A buyback is when a company uses its cash to purchase its own stock. Fewer shares left in the market means each remaining share owns a slightly larger slice of future profits. Airbnb said it has "a new authorization to repurchase up to an additional $12 billion" of its Class A stock. It bought back $700 million last quarter and still had $2.7 billion left under its old plan, Yahoo Finance reported.

Here's some simple math. At Thursday's $170.13 close, $12 billion would buy about 70.5 million shares. The real number would depend on future prices, and an authorization isn't a promise. Companies can spread buybacks over years or never finish them.

What's the catch in the numbers?

The biggest caveat is Reserve Now, Pay Later, a feature that lets guests book without paying everything upfront. The call highlights say it added 3 points to nights booked, so growth was about 13% without it. It also came with more cancellations, about 19% in aggregate versus about 16%, and Airbnb expects its net benefit to shrink in the fourth quarter.

Earnings also got some help from a $135 million reduction in the income tax provision, so not all of that profit growth came from operations. Airbnb's own outlook points to slower nights growth, at least low double digits in the fourth quarter.

What this means for your wallet

If you hold Airbnb directly, here's a simple example with no fees or taxes. A $1,000 position at the $170.13 close would be about 5.88 shares. At the overnight price of $188.22, that's worth about $1,106. But that gain exists only if the price holds through Friday's regular session, and a day like Thursday shows how fast things can change.

Most people own Airbnb only as a small piece of an index fund, so one stock's jump barely registers next to a broad market drop. For travelers, the numbers suggest demand is healthy, though nothing in this report says what your next stay will cost.

What should investors watch next?

Investors may want to watch whether growth holds up without the boost from Reserve Now, Pay Later, and whether cancellations keep rising. Airbnb also plans to start rolling out its own AI travel agent in the first half of 2027. It said about 40% of support issues were resolved without a human agent in the third quarter, up from a third in the second. The next hard numbers come with fourth-quarter results.
