Tuesday's most compelling stock-market chart was not a single soaring ticker. It was the gap between a technology-led rally and a nearly motionless Dow. On October 27, 2026, the Nasdaq Composite gained 308.43 points, or 1.18%, to 26,477.81. The S&P 500 added 45.83 points, or 0.60%, to 7,722.60. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose just 15.99 points, or 0.03%, to 52,377.57.
Behind that split was renewed enthusiasm for artificial intelligence infrastructure, with Broadcom's enormous financing arrangement for Anthropic moving into the spotlight. The exciting part is the scale of the ambition. The important part for investors is understanding what that ambition does—and does not—prove.

Today's closing charts: technology did the heavy lifting
- Nasdaq Composite: 26,477.81, up 308.43 points, or 1.18%.
- S&P 500: 7,722.60, up 45.83 points, or 0.60%.
- Dow Jones Industrial Average: 52,377.57, up 15.99 points, or 0.03%.
The Nasdaq's percentage gain exceeded the Dow's by roughly 1.15 percentage points. That is a useful illustration of why “the market went up” can conceal very different experiences across portfolios. An investor concentrated in semiconductor shares could have seen a much stronger day than someone holding industrial companies.
These indexes also are constructed differently. The Dow is price-weighted, while the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite use market-capitalization-based weighting. Their movements are not interchangeable measures of how every American company performed. Tuesday's chart comparison shows leadership, not a guarantee of broad participation or a forecast for tomorrow.
